Any thoughts that Dartford may have been a bit rusty after their three-week break caused by the weather disappeared as early as the second minute on Saturday. Mark Greatorex, returning to the Club on loan from Margate, played a ball into the penalty area and although the ball seemed to be beyond the reach of Chris Arnold, the young striker was upended by Tony Kessell, the Hastings goalkeeper and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Lee Guiver stepped up to take the kick and beat Kessell to score his first league goal of the season.

The visitors had a chance to level after 11 minutes when they broke quickly out of defence but although Duncan McArthur played a dangerous ball into the box, Stuart Myall was unable to control the ball and the opportunity was lost.

Dartford could have gone further ahead after 16 minutes but Kessell saved Shane Holbrook's shot with his feet. Twelve minutes later, Kessel was in action again when he tipped over Greatorex's shot and from the resulting corner, Luke Morrish arrived late at the back post and the goalkeeper somehow managed to keep out the Dartford captain's point-blank effort.

In the second half, the visitors had several periods of sustained pressure but with confidence growing in the Dartford team, the defence rarely looked in any danger, although Steve Williams did have to make a couple of fine saves at crucial moments.

The Darts should have wrapped up the game with twelve minutes remaining. Following a good passing exchange with substitute Mal Pointer, Greatorex was fouled and Dartford were awarded their second penalty of the match. However, this time Kessel dived to his left to keep out Guiver's spot kick.

Dartford had several good opportunities to add to their tally in the dying minutes. Guiver hit the crossbar, Glenn McTaggart hit a dipping drive just over and Holbrook had another effort saved.

Dartford: Williams, Adlington (Pointer 70 mins), Evans (Cole 90mins), Scott, L. Morrish, Roberts, Ross (Cole 87), Guiver, Arnold (McTaggart 87 mins), Greatorex and Holbrook.

Attendance 192.
