Dartford's unbeaten run, stretching back to November, came to an end on Saturday when they lost to league leader's Chelmsford by the odd goal. Despite the home side having long periods of possession, they rarely looked like breaking the Darts down until they scored the winning goal eight minutes from time. Although having a fully fit squad to choose from, Gary Julians' plans suffered two setbacks in the opening twenty minutes when firstly, Mark Greatorex limped off with a thigh strain after ten minutes and ten minutes later he was joined on the bench when Tom Adlington suffered a knee injury and also had to be replaced. Despite these setbacks, the home side had few chances in the first half and were confined to just two long range efforts from Steve Portway, the league's leading scorer, neither of which bothered Steve Williams in the Dartford goal. Dartford did not create many scoring opportunities although both Chris Arnold and Glenn McTaggart had shots that went over the bar. In the second half Williams made two great saves, firstly after 58 minutes when he had to go full length to turn Hyatt's 25-yard free kick around his right hand post. After 76 minutes he made a fine block to keep out Gary Bennett's shot from 15 yards. However when Chelmsford finally breached the Darts defence with just eight minutes remaining, there was more than an element of luck about it. Bennett had a short from just outside of the penalty area and although Williams appeared to have the shot covered, the ball took a deflection and was just too far away from the goalkeeper's legs and trickled into the net. Dartford: Williams, Adlington (Pointer 22 mins), Evans, Scott, L. Morrish, Roberts, Greatorex (Guiver 10 mins), Ross (Holbrook 80 mins), Arnold, Jones and McTaggart. Attendance 713.
